Protest news
Interesting news from Australia, where commuters are getting to travel free for a day on Sydney's trains after threatening a payment boycott because of poor service. Maybe we could try it in Britain, though from the sounds of it, Sydney's system is even worse than ours:
For some, even the sight of a train arriving late is a relief on a network where many services are cancelled without warning.Though I have had nights like that on the Central Line, of course.

See, I heard about this and cringed, because I figure that if people in this country think they can get something for free, they'll do it. Nothing to do with principles. It's like the petrol crisis - people's responses had nothing to do with solidarity for truck-drivers; they just wanted to pay less for all the single-occupant petrol-guzzling they do. So if this happens here (and, you know, I get the train to work several days a week, and it's really not so bad), I will be very disgruntled.
Apparently I am plumbing new depths of cynicism, even for me.
I wouldn't expect it to work for long. What incentive will Virgin, GNER or any other company have to keep trains running on a line where no one pays the fare?
