Something I realised tonight – while the BBC’s India/Pakistan series of programmes is quite interesting, there seems to be no mention at all in them of Bangladesh. Indeed, discussions of the partition and the subcontinent in history often seem to ignore it entirely, despite the fact that between 1947 and 1971 it was actually the larger part of Pakistan in terms of population. It’s as though discussions of Partition are made easier by acting as though there was only one border line rather than two.

Bangladesh was part of Pakistan at the time of partition. East and West Pakistan they were. After the civil war of 1971 Bangladesh emerged as a country in its own right.
