I’m trying to work out which of these stories I care about the least:
Can anyone give me any reason why I should care about either one?

You should care about the Social Liberal Forum building links with Compass because, post election, building a liberal, anti-conservative (big C and little c) alliance will become increasingly important.
You should care about Clegg’s strong arm tactics because it is wrecking the delicate democratic compact within the party.

Well, I’m not convinced that liberal and anti-conservative (or liberal and left) are necessarily the same thing, especially in terms of dealing with groups like Compass who don’t seem to be offering much more than a new version of the Blair Project.
And leaders have been picking fights with Conference for years, just to show how dynamic and free of the membership they are – yes, Clegg and Cable have worked this one particularly badly, but it’s nothing new.
