One Sunday morning back in the 70s, I was watching television and saw a programme that appeared to be some new kids’ thing that I’d not heard of. I’d missed the very start, but they seemed to be having all sorts of fun playing a version of Cowboys and Indians around a farm:

Welcome to Britain, where it would be far too simple to just tell kids that farmyards and dangerous places. No, we have to scare the living daylights out of them by letting them see in detail just how many ways Farmer Barleymow’s lair can kill them. If we don’t show them that it can happen, how else will kids know that you can drow in a vat of slurry?
